A few thoughts on preparation for the next wave of outbreak and panic.
- If we have a large uptake in COVID cases, we will probably also see more hoarding. Buying a little extra each time will spread out spending and allow stores to restock. If an online store allows backordered purchases, you can always cancel the order later.
- Increase your Internet bandwidth. Poor service makes calls very frustrating. I recently switched to 200 mbs and it has made a big difference.
- Install battery backups for your key electronics: router, modem, phone, computer equipment. We aren’t worried about power loss, but this will protect from intermittent power flickers and variations.
- Make sure to fill gas tanks between 25-50%. Consumption is down, but almost all disasters have a demand driven shortage due to panic.
- When shopping, add 25% more of non-perishable items you are already buying and using.
- Make sure you have enough cash on hand.
- Make sure you have a thermometer and spare batteries if digital. Fever is the easiest way to separate COVID-19 from allergies, colds, and flu. No-touch thermometers seem to be sold out everywhere. If using a contact on, make sure to wipe with alcohol and allow to dry before putting away.
- There is no reason to stock up on bottled water. Our water supply is fine. Instead, consider sports drinks or meal replacement drinks (Ensure) in case you get sick and can’t keep solid food down.
- Make sure you have enough required prescription meds on hand. Consider adding Tylenol (fever), anti-diarrhea pills, and allergy medications.
- Add some fun items to your prep. A new cake, movie, games, cake, puzzles, cake.
- This is a great time to switch from scheduling to goal-based planning. Setup a personal Kanban board with projects and fun stuff. Create a WIP balance to help control stress and overworking.
- Setup a dedicated workspace away from your social space.
